My desire to write this study came from the realization that many Christians, even those who have been walking with Christ for years, lack understanding of who they are in Christ. The transformative power of Jesus Christ is not evident in their lives, and they are unaware of the living presence of God within them. They are desperately searching for answers; seeking comfort and wisdom from the world only to find that the world doesn't have the answers they're looking for; only Jesus does. God has given us the powerful gift of the Holy Spirit, who lives within every believer. The Holy Spirit teaches us, He guides and comforts us. He fills us with His joy and peace, and He gives us wisdom, discernment, and divine revelation. As believers, we should look different to the rest of the world because the Holy Spirit lives within us. We have died to our flesh and we no longer live for ourselves, but we live for His great name.
God created us to be in fellowship with others. When we were born again, we were adopted into the family of God as beloved sons or daughters. We were united with other brothers and sisters in Christ. As modeled for us in the early church, we are to: encourage one another (1 Thessalonians 5:11); build each other up (Ephesians 4:29) and carry each other's burdens (Galatians 6:2); and spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together (Hebrews 10:24-25).
Jesus made time for His disciples and breaking bread with them was important. The scripture says, "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer" (Acts 2:42 NIV). Acts 2:46 ESV says, "And day by day, attending temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts." We are a united body of believers, and when we break bread together we experience the beauty of community the way that God designed it to be.
It's time to get back to the ancient practice of breaking bread in fellowship with others. It's not enough to know of Jesus; to experience Him is life changing.
